Spring Break Goals
1) Celebrate Ms. S's wedding (tonight!). Not only am I sure to cry a lot (thank you waterproof {Younique} mascara), but take lots of pictures for her. My friend Mrs. K took lots of the venue and decor for me, which helped tide me over until the professional ones came six weeks later.
2) Paint our cabinets. We ripped out our medicine cabinets in our master and had custom shelving built. I'm staining the new cabinets over break to match the other cabinets that I painted {last year}.
We're going to Home Depot tomorrow to get some new paint brushes to complete the project.
3) Paperwork
Between a doctor's appointment, renewing my teaching license, getting finger printed for my license, and updating my passport with my new married name, I've got a lot of paperwork to do.
4) Family time
I'm helping B's aunt plan her mom's 90th birthday party next month. We're having lunch on Monday to talk about decor and some of the details. Plus she won some free leggings at a Lularoe party I hosted, so I've got to give those to her as well.
5) Prep for third grade
I'm redoing my "No Way Jose" game to fit third grade standards. I know I won't need it until August, but I won't have access to a printer over the summer, so I should start this early. I'll need to cut out laminate, but that's easily done during a summer Netflix binge. I've also started mapping out my supply list of what I'll need for third grade.
6) Finish my mom's album
As part of her Christmas gift, I'm making my mom an album of wedding pictures. Shutterfly doesn't work well with our professional pictures (they're too detailed, so it comes out pixalated), so I'm using another site instead. I've got the backbone done, I just want to add in some silly photo booth images as well.
7) Catch up on grading
To be fair, this may or may not happen. I'll probably grade in spurts, meaning three papers and then do something else. It seems less painful this way.
8) Finish Play Like a Pirate
It's one of the books I picked up at ASCD and I'm loving it. As I shared on Twitter, it's like having a super nerdy conversation with an old friend. I'm feeling inspired and making lots of notes in my book.
9) Nap. Every day if possible. (Day 1 complete).
10) Catch up on blogging. Between classroom adventures and ASCD, I've got a lot of half started blog posts I need to finish.
What are your spring break goals?
Spring Break Homework
Yes, I gave my students homework over spring break.
They came up with ideas and were really excited about all their "work". I shared ideas with a few other teachers and they're making similar ones for their students.
They deserve a break, but I don't want them staying inside for 10 days playing video games. I want them to have fun with their families and build happy memories. I want to focus on their emotional and social needs, not just their academic ones.

Photography Challenge (Catch Up) and the start of Spring Break
At precisely 3:31 pm yesterday, Spring Break started. At 3:40, I was in my car. By 3:53, I had a tall Blue Moon in front of me and four giggly coworkers in our booth at PT's for girls' night.
Glorious, glorious decisions. I'd like to brag and say we had a wild night, but I was in pajamas by 7 pm and out by 8. It'd be a long week!
Photography Challenge Recap
Day 5: "Not Mine"
Technically I took this picture on day 4, but saved it for Wednesday. Tuesday was my work wife's birthday, so I snuck into her classroom before she got there and decorated on behalf of the grade level.
I did get caught by two other teachers, so I'm clearly not up on my ninja skills.
She felt loved and valued, so that's what matters.
Day 6: "Spring Is In The Air"
Spring means my allergies are a mess. We are dealing with some epic winds and drastic temperature changes, which doesn't help. I'm on a daily decongestant, nasal steroid, and Allegra to keep things contained.
I also frequently wear a face mask while outside, so I decided to have a glamour shoot with my mask. It's my favorite accessory to any spring day.
Day 7: "Where I'd Rather Be"
First, my bed. We have a new bed and I love naps.
Second, I wanted to be at happy hour. As posted above, we made that happen pretty much as soon as possible after work ended.
Third, I want to be on my honeymoon!
In July, the hubs and I are off on a grand adventure. We'll be visiting some friends in Florida, going to Harry Potter World, and then off to an island resort in the Dutch Caribbean for a week of relaxing and outdoor adventures. The fur babies will be staying with my momma. We'll be back in town for a few days before both of us have to return to work.
Day 8: "Hobbies"
One of my hobbies is getting dressed up with my hubby and celebrating. Tonight we're celebrating a fellow teacher's wedding. She's one of the kindest people and we're thrilled to get to share in her special day. We are sharing a table with some other fun coworkers and there's an open bar, so two other hobbies (drinking and selfies) will also be occurring!
I've cleaned out my phone for the night so Facebook will be filled with pictures tomorrow!

Testing...testing...we're reading for standardized testing
First and foremost, I can't think of any teacher who truly enjoys standardized testing.
Do I like analyzing data to see trends and how my students have improved? Of course. Do I spend days doing "test prep" and "teach to the test"? Nope. I offer quality instruction every day of the school year, not just right before exams.
I start by sharing this image with my students and their families:
Yes, testing is important. Yes, testing needs to be taken seriously and their scores can impact their placement in sixth grade classes. But do their fifth grade standardized tests determine the rest of their lives?
No.
But they've got lots of feelings regarding testing. We even have a big {pep assembly} to get them all pumped up (but honestly, it leaves some of them feeling even more anxious).
So, about a week before testing, I send home a request to families. This year, it conveniently coincided with progress reports so I was able to send home this notice and colorful stationary without arousing too much suspicion from my students.
I also sent out class dojo reminders to parents to return the letters. Some sent back beautiful notes like this:
While others never returned the letters (things happen) or sent back blank stationary. That was kind of a bummer because I ended up writing nineteen letters the night before testing started. (Yes, 19/36 of my kiddos needed a letter. Each one was hand written and slightly different, so they knew it was personalized and I care.)
I didn't want my students to not have something to open the morning of the test. Every table had letters:
After breakfast (because all our students get free universal breakfast), my students opened their letters.
There were tears. It was a sweet, beautiful moment. They went into the test feeling loved, supported, and encouraged. That's what all students need.
During the test, they got fruit snacks (bad choice with the computers) on the first day.
Things went relatively smoothly the first day. I did have to write my first citation (during testing) for a student not listening. I can't stress enough to this student that listening to directions during testing is kind of a big deal.
After the test, they got some indoor recess (due to the weather) and played games. They have no homework (besides reading) on testing nights. I also don't expect much from them academically on testing days because the hope is they've used all their mental capacities to do amazing on their test and have nothing left to give. So we do some brain breaks, read for pleasure, watch some science videos (thank you Discovery Education!), and we work on logic puzzles.
The second day was a little more frustrating. There were some major computer issues with the server (not on our end), so students got a lot of extra reading time. They did an amazing job with being quiet (because they basically had to be quiet the entire day).
My last one finished testing a few minutes before the bell. I spent almost six hours actively monitoring standardized testing. For those of you not in the teaching realm, it means I walked in a circle, watching them type. I pretend I'm in NASCAR, silently making my hundreds of laps around the computer lab. I can't read the test or the questions, I can't help them in any way, I just have to smile and encourage them.
I did get to rock this sweet testing shirt that a fellow teacher made:
They didn't find it funny. I thought it was hysterical (but that's usually how things go. They don't always appreciate my delightful sense of humor.)
Due to all the computer glitches and their best efforts, we didn't even get a fun reward on Friday (day 2 of the first round of testing). To show them that I was proud of them, I bought a bunch of rice krispie treats (something no one is allergic to in my room) and told them I appreciated them "sticking" with testing. We enjoyed those snacks the following Monday and tried to take an outdoor recess, but instead dealt with a sudden thunder storm. We set a timer and played games inside the classroom instead.
Tomorrow we start the second round of testing with science. Two days of testing (hopefully we'll be done before lunch), then afternoon specials and some reading time. Friday is field day in the afternoon and we'll be doing games in the morning. Next week is Spring Break (HALLELUJAH) and our last round of standardized testing (math) will take place in May.
We'll be "adopted" by primary classes for the last round of testing. I can't wait to see what cute cards and treats my kiddos get from the little ones. While I don't love testing, I can say that the sense of community and support my students feel is amazing.
I did see this cute idea on pinterest and if I can find 3 dozen oranges at Costco, this may happen:
How do you motivate your students for standardized testing?

Photography Challenge, Days 3 & 4
I've been consistent with posting to social media each day, but since I don't blog from my phone, this sometimes gets forgotten. I'm working on it.
For April's photography challenge,
Here are days 3 and 4.
Day 3
Yesterday was "shapes". I chose to rock my new Carly (Lularoe dress) which I got for free for hosting an in home party.
The geometric shape design reminds me of a mermaid, which quite frankly was a huge selling point. Additionally, I could wear a small, which was another boost for my ego. (On a side note, I didn't win the biggest loser contest at work, but I did lose ten pounds and am continuing with the small tweaks I've made to my diet.)
I'm also rocking my new {Younique} lipstain in speechless. It's got an orange-nude tone and I like it!
While it gets a tad annoying to have to wash all my Lularoe items on delicate, the fabrics are incredibly soft and it's like wearing pajamas to work...except it's socially appropriate. As the weather heats up, I'll be continuing to wear a lot of dresses to work. Plus it was a Monday, and new clothes seem to make Mondays go a little better.
Day 4
I actually snapped tomorrow's picture today too, so don't mind the matching outfit. Day 4 was "good together".
I've got some awesome parents this year and it seemed like the perfect time to brag about them. Between sending in extra supplies, making sure we're stocked for class parties, chaperoning field trips, donating to our {donors choose} projects, or sending our class post cards from their vacations, I've got some great support this year.
This post card is from one of my most supportive parents. Her and her fiancee went on an amazing South American adventure and sent us post cards from their journey! This one has a stamp from "the end of the world" which is pretty cool. Not only does it help us feel connected to others, but it provided an awesome authentic moment to do a geography lesson.
But that turned into a lesson on how the hemispheres have opposite seasons due to the earth's tilt. Which then turned into a lesson on the inner and outer planets. Then one of my students brought up Pluto and it's declassification as a planet, so then we had that discussion. Naturally, astronauts came up next...and that's just sometimes how learning unfolds in my classroom.
I so desperately wanted to show them this,
but realized it would be highly inappropriate. #thestruggleisreal

Photography Challenge, Day 2: In My Hands...
Day 2 (of 30) and attempting to be consistent with this photography challenge:
Yesterday, during my {Younique} bash, my pup Waffles was incredibly well behaved. She's two and very much still a puppy. She did eagerly stare down everyone with food in their hands and showed off her ability to shake, but politely interacted with everyone (meaning giving kisses whether or not they were asked for).
I was so proud of how well she behaved.
Of course, she must have only been on her best behavior for guests because she ate my wicker basket.
So ladies and gentlemen, here's day 2 of the photography challenge:
She's not sorry. At all. Don't let that face fool you!

April Photography Challenge
I get bored with repetition. So for the month of April, I thought it would be fun to participate in this photography challenge:
Day 1: Something purple:
I hosted a {Younique} Lipstains & Lularoe party this morning with one of my close friends. We were supposed to have it last month, but the whole bronchitis/sinus infection/ear infection situation got in the way of the event.
So we were all set up for brunch:
We aren't very good sales people because we were way more focused on mimosas and girl talk then selling make up and clothes. Hopefully our friends appreciate our super low key vibe (and we did make some sales).
Now here's the bad news...the lip stains are still on my arm a full eight hours later. I went bowling with the colorful streaks. The staying power is real.
